FAQs
🔥 GENERAL WILDFIRE DEFENSE FAQs
Q: What does Colorado Wildfire Defence do?
A: We help protect homes and properties in wildfire-prone areas through aesthetic, code-compliant exterior upgrades — like fire-resistant roofing, siding, windows — and wildfire sprinkler systems designed to defend structures during a wildfire event.
Q: Who do you serve?
A: We work with homeowners, HOAs, local governments, and commercial property managers across Colorado’s Front Range and mountain communities. If wildfire is a concern, we’re here to help.
Q: What’s the difference between landscape mitigation and what CWD does?
A: Landscaping helps reduce fuels around the home. We focus on protecting the structure itself — hardening the building exterior and adding direct wildfire defense systems like sprinklers.
🏠 WILDFIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM FAQs
Q: What’s a wildfire sprinkler system, and how does it work?
A: It’s a structure-focused system that sprays water on the roof, walls, and surrounding perimeter to create a moist, defensible zone in the event of a wildfire. These are not lawn irrigation systems — they’re specifically designed to help repel embers and radiant heat.
Q: Do you offer permanent or portable sprinkler systems?
A: Both. Our permanent systems are installed and ready year-round. We also offer temporary kits that homeowners or emergency managers can rent and deploy during high fire risk periods.
Q: Are these sprinkler systems automatic or manual?
A: Most of our systems are manual, meaning you or a designated person activates them when a threat is near. This gives you control, and avoids false alarms or unnecessary water use.
Q: What if I don’t have city water or enough pressure?
A: We can add auxiliary water tanks and pumps to ensure your system works even in remote locations or during municipal water restrictions.
🧱 HOME HARDENING & EXTERIOR RETROFIT FAQs
Q: What is “home hardening”?
A: It’s the process of making your home more fire-resistant by upgrading vulnerable features like your roof, vents, siding, eaves, windows, and decks using wildfire-tested materials and designs.
Q: Are your upgrades compliant with new Colorado fire codes?
A: Yes. We follow the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code and International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) to ensure our work meets or exceeds current regulations.
Q: What if I’m not in a designated wildfire zone?
A: Fires don’t follow maps. If your home is in the foothills, near open space, or in a historically dry area, it may still be at risk. Our initial consultation includes a free wildfire exposure assessment.
💰 INSURANCE & COSTS
Q: Will these services help me get better insurance rates?
A: Possibly. Insurance companies are increasingly rewarding wildfire mitigation, especially in high-risk areas. We can provide documentation to support your mitigation efforts when you speak with your provider.
Q: How much does a sprinkler system cost?
A: It depends on the size of your home and water access. Basic temporary kits may be under $5,000, while large permanent systems with pumps and tanks can run $10,000–$25,000+. We’ll give you a custom quote after a site visit.
Q: Do you offer financing?
A: Yes, we offer flexible payment plans and can help you explore rebates or local funding options where available.
🏛 GOVERNMENT & HOAs
Q: Do you work with government agencies or HOAs?
A: Yes — we provide defensible space and structural mitigation solutions for city and county buildings, schools, and neighborhood associations. We also help develop wildfire response plans and shared sprinkler systems for communities.
Q: Can you design neighborhood-wide systems?
A: Absolutely. We can design coordinated systems to protect multiple homes or community infrastructure, which is often more efficient and cost-effective.
😄 JUST CURIOUS…
Q: Why do you spell “Defence” with a ‘c’? Isn’t it supposed to be “Defense”?
A: Great catch — and no, we didn’t flunk spelling. We chose “Defence” with a c because it gives us a bold, distinctive look (and makes us feel a little more rugged, like we might also repel dragons). Also, it’s the British/Commonwealth spelling — and since wildfires don’t care about borders or spelling conventions, we figured we’d go global with it. Plus, people remember it!
🧭 WILDFIRE CODE QUESTIONS? WE’RE A RESOURCE.
Q: I'm hearing a lot about the new wildfire codes in Colorado. Can you help me understand how they affect my home or project?
A: Yes! We stay current on the latest wildfire resiliency codes — including the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code and the adopted chapters of the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC). Whether you're a homeowner, builder, or city planner, we can help you interpret how the rules apply to your location and project. We’re happy to talk through what’s required, what’s recommended, and how to comply without compromising aesthetics or budget.
